Be wise when surfing the web!

A warning goes out about compromised websites delivering java script to infect your computer.  So the way that this works is 1) a web page is compromised by a hacker and some of the code is rewritten to lead you to another page to infect your computer or 2) a banner ad network is hacked and the infected code is delivered through ads on legitimate web pages leading you to another site to infect your computer.  Unless your visiting unknown pages and just clicking on every single link on a page, scenario 1 seems to be the lesser threat.  Scenario 2 seems to be the bigger threat as some major web pages have fallen victim to this.  So how can one protect themselves against this?  First you want to use an anti virus that has a script scanner.  It will go through the java scripts and check them against known malicious code and will not allow those to execute.  Another option, though a littler more technical is safer and it is what I use;  Firefox browser with the Ad Block Plus and Noscript  addons.  Firefox is my preferred browser because of all the addons that are available for it.  The Ad Block Plus addon when configured stops ads from being displayed on almost all web pages.  Because it is blocking the ads, the pages load faster your browsing experience is improved.  It also handles tracking cookies to better protect privacy.  The Noscript addon is where it gets technical.  This addon by default puts all java scripts on a black list and you have to manually allow the scripts to run.  This way, the user only lets scripts run that they know are from a legitimate site and does not allow random code to execute on its own.  Once a site is allowed, it is put on a white list and will always be allowed automatically.  Hope this helps and don’t forget that being smart about what site you go to and what link your clicking is the first step in keeping your computer safe.

New Java update out

There is a new Java version out, Runtime 6 version 23.  They say its an update to fix some bugs and to increase performance with no security issues but you may still want to install it.  Head over here to grab it.  Make sure the older version is uninstalled when your done.  This past Tuesday, Microsoft put out quite a few patches for their various Windows OS’s so make sure that you run Windows Update to ensure you are all patched up.  Staying patched up helps plug security holes in the OS and is one small step in keeping your computer safe from malicious software.

The best coffee in Walla Walla!

Well, not really tech related but what Nerd doesn’t like a good cup of Joe to keep him going while fixing computers?  Walla Walla Roastery is the best coffee in Walla Walla bar none.  They roast their own beans and offer light to dark roast for every liking.  They also have tea and the best hot chocolate I have ever tasted.  Where are they in Walla Walla?  They are up near the airport, about two blocks past the main terminal on the right.  They have a drive thru if your in  a hurry or go on in and enjoy a relaxing atmosphere.  A little out of the way but worth the drive.
